Cost of Attendance

The Cost of Attendance (COA) is important for students to understand when it comes to their education expenses. The COA is an estimate of your educational expenses for a period of enrollment, generally two full-time semesters. The cost figures are a combination of tuition and applicable fees and allowances for related educational expenses such as books, transportation and personal and miscellaneous expenses. The COA also includes an average room and board plan as well as a room and board allowance for those who choose to live off-campus.

Every student will be charged tuition, the UPass fee and other applicable lab and technology fees. Full-time tuition is defined as a minimum 12 credits. Tuition is based on credit hour enrollment, Ohio residency and a student's academic program (undergraduate, graduate and law). Students living in a university residence hall will be assessed room and board charges. All other figures included in the COA are estimated expenses associated with attending the University and vary with each student. The tuition and fees schedule are subject to change without notice by the CSU Board of Trustees.

Repeated Course Policy

A new federal regulation limits the number of times a student may repeat a course and receive financial aid for that course. Please note that the repeat course policy for financial aid is separate from institutional academic policies regarding repeat courses.

  • A student may receive aid when repeating a course that was previously failed (received a 0.0 or No Pass), regardless of the number of times the course was attempted and failed.
  • A student may receive aid to repeat a previously passed course (D or higher) one additional time. This includes course(s) transferred from another school that were passed. Retaking “W” grade courses is not considered repeating courses.
  • Once a student has completed any course twice with a passing grade, he/she is no longer eligible to receive aid for that course.
  • If a student retakes a course that is not aid eligible, a recalculation of aid is done to exclude the credits for the repeated course. Your aid may be adjusted.
  • This rule applies whether or not the student received aid for earlier enrollments in the course.
  • Students will receive notification if they are aid applicants and attempt to repeat coursework beyond the limits

Satisfactory Academic Progress

You must achieve satisfactory academic progress toward your degree in order to maintain eligibility for most types of financial aid. To maintain satisfactory academic progress, you must meet the following three components: grade point average, completion rate requirement, and maximum time frame for degree completion. Additionally, you must be eligible to continue in your program of study in order to receive financial aid. You also need to be aware of the impact incomplete grades, withdrawals, the absence of letter grades and the treatment of transfer credits will have on your financial aid status. You can find more information on the satisfactory academic progress website.

Return of Title IV Funds Policy (RTIV)

If you are receiving federal student aid (Title IV aid) and withdraw (drop) all your classes during a semester, the Financial Aid Office will calculate the portion of federal aid you have earned and any unearned aid must be returned to the aid programs. This policy affects you if you withdraw from all of your classes in a semester prior to the 60% point of the semester. If you withdraw after the 60% point, you must provide proof that you were actively engaged in the course(s), after the 60% point in order to earn all of your aid and not be subject to the return of Title IV funds.

The percentage of aid you have earned is equal to the percentage of the semester that you have completed (date you withdraw from all classes). To determine the percentage you completed, the number of calendar days completed is divided into the number of calendar days in the semester. This percentage is multiplied by the amount of aid disbursed or eligible to be disbursed to calculate the amount of aid you have earned and can keep.

Any unearned aid (total aid minus earned aid) must be returned to the aid programs in the following order:

  • Direct Unsubsidized Loan
  • Direct Subsidized Loan
  • Federal Perkins Loan
  • Federal PLUS Loan
  • Federal Pell Grant
  • Federal SEOG

If it is determined that there is unearned aid, then the school must return the unearned funds. The school is required to return the total institutional charges multiplied by the percentage of funds that was unearned. CSU will bill you for any account balance created when the university is required to return financial aid.

If you fail all of your classes in a semester, you may be subject to a R2T4 (Return of Title IV Aid) calculation. If you have "earned" at least one of your F's (i.e. attended class until the end of the semester and received an F for poor performance), then no calculation is required. However, if you received all F's because you stopped attending at some point in the semester, then a R2T4 calculation is required based on the last date of attendance. If a last date of attendance cannot be determined, the 50% point of the semester will be used as the withdrawal date. CSU will bill you for any account balance created if the university is required to return financial aid.
